1. As a Creative Outlet
It's almost like a burning fire inside of me that needs to be put out. The need to create, the need to see an idea come to life, the need to work with my hands — the list goes on. I think that's called passion. For me, the texture and repetitive technique of macramé draws me in. I learned in a science lab in college that I love repetitive tasks and perfecting techniques. It's no surprise I love macramé.
2. It's Meditative
Macramé works my creative brain, but once I'm in the middle of a project it clears my mind. I'm more of a 'knot as you go' girl. Too much pre-planning brings out the anxious part of me. So I pick up some rope, measure and cut, and just start knotting — ideas start flowing on their own.
3. To Work With My Hands
I love creating and perfecting techniques, especially when it keeps my hands moving. I'm a busy body, and when my hands are working on something I feel like I'm accomplishing something — because I am.
4. A Way to Connect
Teaching macramé has been my way to connect with like-minded people. My first workshop was transformative — I met people active in a community focused on crafts, plants, and genuine support. I'm happy macramé gave me that.
5. A Confidence Booster
Everyone searches for something they're good at and actually enjoy. I finally found it. It's a boost in confidence knowing I can create something from nothing — and it doesn't have to be a huge piece everyone loves. It just has to be mine.
We are all artists in our own right. From the way we look at the sky, to writing, to the way you read to your kid in funny voices. You have a perspective no one else has — and that alone is enough. But that's why I macramé. Why do you do what you do?
